KGB Releases Lithuanian Police Official

State Security Committee released detained about a week and a half ago at Grodno customs company commander of municipal mounted police of Vilnius head commissariat, Laimonas Bankauskas, who carried drugs. It was reported in the center of information and public relations of Belarusian KGB.

As explained in KGB press service, the investigator of territorial office of KGB of the Republic of Belarus released Lithuanian citizen in accordance with part 4 of article 119 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Belarus in coordination with the prosecutor’s office of Grodno region.

The article provides that the preventive measure is canceled when there is no further need, or it is changed to stricter or softer when it is caused by circumstances of the case.

It is assumed that after bringing the documents in order, Laimonas Bankauskas is to return to Lithuania on August 26, DELFI informs. In the evening of August 25, the spokesman for the president of Lithuania, Linas Balsys, told BNS that the chief of Lithuanian mounted police already stayed in the consulate of Lithuania in Grodno.

«At the beginning of this story, I addressed the leadership of Belarus, urging to investigate this situation as quickly and impartially as possible and suggested that this incident should hamper the development of bilateral relations. The neighboring country has heard it and decided to give the detainee back to Lithuania, I see that as a result of consecutive improvement of relations», Dalia Grybauskaite said in her turn.

As Telegraf previously reported, on August 25, Lithuanian president stated that she was waiting for «good news» from Belarus on detained company commander of municipal mounted police of Vilnius head commissariat , Laimonas Bankauskas.

The head of Lithuanian state noted that at the state level relations between the two neighboring countries were improving rapidly and basing on this improvement, she hoped to receive news.

Laimonas Bankauskas was detained on Lithuanian-Belarusian border on August 15. During the car check of Lithuanian citizen there was found a small package with narcotic substance under the front passenger seat covering. The examination revealed that it was methamphetamine of 45.5 grams.

Lithuanian police officer himself rejected all accusations against him and said his detention was a provocation.
