Despite the agreement between Belarus and Lithuania on the transit of 2.5 million tons of oil a year through the port of Klaipeda, Latvia also keeps on negotiations with Belarus over the Venezuelan oil transshipment through Ventspils port. This was stated by Director of Transit Policy Department of the Ministry of Communications Andris Maldups.

According to him, the fact that Lithuania and Belarus agreed on transit, does not mean that it is completely to go exactly through Klaipeda, because the latter is unable to immediately provide the necessary volume of oil transshipment. Any of the Baltic ports has to invest additional funds for this matter. In this regard, Belarus hasn’t signed the final contract with any of the ports so far, Delfi reports.

Andris Maldups and Secretary of the Ministry of Communications of Latvia Anriys Matisse had earlier visited Belarus, where they discussed the transit issues. Belarusian authorities are now deciding what transit volumes can be spun across the Baltic ports, and they, in turn, are trying to figure out the necessary volume of investment and guaranteed volume of transit. Currently, Belarus is considering the possibility of transit through the four ports: Ventspils, Tallinn, Klaipeda and Odessa, Andris Maldups said.

According to Telegraf, Lithuania and Belarus have agreed on Venezuelan oil transit through the Klaipeda Seaport. It is expected to transport approximately 2.5 million tons of oil over the year. An appropriate agreement is to be signed in October 2010.
