Lithuania will seek 24-hours monitoring over the Belarusian NPP by international security organizations. This was stated by Lithuanian president Grybauskaite on March 16. According to her, Vilnius forced to make such a step by the recent events in Japan, where radiation leaks from nuclear power plants were marked after earthquakes.

«Lithuania has only one way to follow, which is monitoring compliance with clear and strict requirements of the Espoo Convention (Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context — Telegraf), DELFI  quoted the Lithuanian president with reference to BNS.

According to Dali Grybauskaite, she has already raised the issue of NPP non-construction in Belarus, 50 km from Vilnius, at the meetings with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko. Also, the Lithuanian side has repeatedly stated this during other negotiations. «I received the following response: «Then you slide Ignalina from our border,» said President of Lithuania.

As Telegraf previously reported, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin after a meeting of the Union State Cabinet in Minsk on March 15, where there was signed an agreement to build a nuclear plant in Belarus, said that the station, built by the Russians, would be more secure than the Japanese nuclear power plant, damaged by earthquakes.
