Lithuanian Seimas is deeply concerned about NPP construction in Belarus, as its zone of radiation exposure can cover the territory of Lithuania, including Vilnius, as well as reach and affect the Vilia river basin. This is stated in the resolution, adopted by Seimas on March 17 on the safety of NPP planned construction in Lithuania and its neighboring territory.
Lithuanian MPs demanded compliance with all provisions of the Espoo Convention, as well as the IAEA and other international instruments, from Belarus and Russia. They also called on Minsk and Moscow to respond in substance to all of Lithuania’s questions about nuclear power plant, to hold public hearings in Lithuania and bilateral consultations, reports DELFI.
The resolution also states that the political responsibility for the NPP safety is placed not only on Belarus, but also on Russia, participating in the construction of the station. «The tragic recent events in Japan and the subsequent accident at nuclear power plants have once again confirmed the need for consistent and strict compliance with the international instruments of security requirements during the design, construction and operation of nuclear power facilities, as well as holding an exhaustive evaluation of environmental impact beforehand,» the representatives of the Seimas of Lithuania.
They also underlined that Lithuania, developing project of Visaginas nuclear power plant, has consistently adhered to the provisions of all international conventions and legal instruments, has provided neighboring countries with all the necessary information about the project.
As Telegraf previously reported, MEP, member of the Foreign Affairs commission, Werner Schulz, called on Belarus and Russia to abandon nuclear plant construction. «This is a cynical and dangerous arrogance. I believe that it’s simply unacceptable to rely on nuclear power plants, thus demonstrating the absence of any common sense, in such a tragic situation for the whole world,» he said.
