Lukashenko Allows to Send Belarusian Peacekeepers to Lebanon

President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, signed a decree to send Belarusian soldiers to participate in the maintenance of international peace and security in the Republic of Lebanon. According to the document, in Lebanon there will go nine military men of the Armed Forces of Belarus, who will make part of the United Nations Interim Force.

Belarusian soldiers will participate in the UN mission as staff officers of the mission, hospital doctors and specialists in military-civilian interaction. They will provide information for the mission’s activity, realize medical assistance to the peacekeepers, establish interaction between Interim Force and civilian population and public organizations.

The decision to direct Belarusian specialists was made basing on Belarus’ commitments, arising from the Republic’s joining the UN Standby Arrangements System in 2001, which govern the participation of the Organization’s country-members in peacekeeping operations, as well as in accordance with the law from November 29, 2003 № 254-3 «On the procedure for sending soldiers, officials officers and rank and file of internal affairs bodies, bodies of financial investigations of the State Control Committee of Belarus, emergency bodies and units, prosecutors, civilian personnel out of the Republic of Belarus for participation in the maintenance of international peace and security».

The preparation of Belarusian peacekeepers was carried out in strict accordance with the principles of voluntary participation, legal and social protection of peacekeepers, comprehensive material and logistic provision, noted in the press service of the head of state.

«Execution of this decree will confirm Belarus’ commitment to promote international peace under the UN auspices and in accordance with the principles of international law, as well as will enhance the country’s position in international scene, will create new mechanisms for implementing its foreign policy interests», stated in the press service of Alexander Lukashenko.
