Acting head of the United Civil Party and former chairman of the National Bank of Belarus Stanislav Bahdankevich believes that the authorities of the country will face "difficult days" when Russia halts cheap raw materials' supplies. "Then the most difficult days will begin for Lukashenko. I think he won't stand till the end of his term," he believes.

Stanislav Bahdankevich believes the economic condition of the country leaves much to be desired, as the Belarusian authorities have spoilt their relations both with Russia and the West. According to Stanislav Bahdankevich, Alexander Lukashenko «is kneeling now to the Kremlin and he is well aware of this fact.» «The economy is getting worse. He understands the need for Western investment and loans. Contrary to the militant rhetoric, he will soon have to talk to the West,» Gazeta Wyborcza quoted opposition politician.

According to the former chairman of the National Bank, Alexander Lukashenko will «somehow survive in 2011, but he will have to seek funds for loans in 2012 — 2013,» reported IA «REGNUM-Belarus.»

Lukashenko Losing his Temper, Bahdankevich

Dispersal of mass demonstrations in Minsk after the presidential election indicates that Alexander Lukashenko has not lost his temper, said Stanislav Bahdankevich. «He has become hostage to the self-created system. Lukashenko does not know the exact number of his supporters, and therefore got frightened, having seen numerous opponents. This is the reason for mass repression,» says the former head of the National Bank.

As Telegraf previously reported, the Latvian Ambassador to Belarus Mikhail Popkov, named one of the possible causes of dispersal of demonstrators in Minsk on December 19 «the contradictions in the Belarusian political elite between the moderate group, led by the head of the presidential administration, and the security forces.» «There’s also the possibility that Lukashenko has not lost his temper,» the diplomat said.
