President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko believes that the current situation in North Africa and the Middle East indicates the importance of the regional security format. In this connection, the Belarusian leader believes it necessary to increase the international prestige of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) as a regional structure, effectively maintaining security in the post-Soviet space.

«Instability in one country can cause destabilization and escalation of tension in the neighboring countries. Lack of coordinated policy and clear system of collective security leads, unfortunately, to disastrous consequences,» said Alexander Lukashenko during a meeting with heads of delegations participating in the meeting of Council of CSTO Foreign Ministers.

According to the president of Belarus, the CSTO member-states should coordinate their actions in the international arena especially under the present circumstances. «It is foreign ministers that should play a key role in the rapprochement of positions, development of common approaches and pursuing common interests,» BelTA quoted Alexander Lukashenko.

The Head of State believes in the CSTO countries to work together «to make a qualitative leap forward in securing the post-Soviet space.» To this end, the president thinks, «political will, mutual trust and willingness to make certain compromises for joining forces» are necessary.

«Initiatives that may be badly placed at first glance are not an invention of Belarus, but all that’s been pent up. Someone has to assign primary importance to these questions, if we believe that this organization hasn’t only proven to be, but also has prospects for its development,» said Alexander Lukashenko. He assured to persist in the initiatives of Belarus and their practical implementation.
