Majority of Belarusians Trust in Lukashenko

The highest trust of Belarus' citizens among state authority institutions has the president of the Republic. It was stated by 80% of participants of public opinion poll, conducted by the Information-Analytical Center under the Presidential Administration of Belarus (IAC).

The level of citizens’ trust in Alexander Lukashenko remains almost unchanged since 2007, reported in the center. The vast majority of citizens (76.5%) believe that activity of the current president of Belarus meets their interests. 77.3% of respondents agreed with the statement that under the leadership of the current president the state is developing in right direction, BelTA informs.

The next on the level of trust is the government (the Council of Ministers) (74%), parliament (National Assembly) (73%), local authorities (70%). The trust of citizens to the state authority bodies grew slightly over the last year, noted in the IAC.

Among law enforcement, controlling, judicial authorities of the country, the people trust in army most of all. It was confirmed by 81.5% of respondents. Then follow the court — 76% (in 2009 — 71%), the prosecutor’s office — 75% (69%), the State Security Committee — 72.5% (72%).

Public opinion poll has also showed that among political parties, public and religious organizations, the majority of Belarusians trust in church — 82% (in 2009 — 77.5%).

Only 10% of Belarusians trust in opposition

However, according to the IAC, opposition parties do not enjoy the citizens’ confidence. Their level of confidence is below 10%. Less than 20% of Belarusians trust in so-called independent trade unions, which stay outside of the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus.

However, basing on poll’s result it was discovered that the majority of Belarusians connect their hopes for overcoming of the economic crisis and further development of the country with the president. It was declared by 69.5% of respondents. The minority of citizens rely on political parties and opposition (2%).

The IAC experts also found out that half of respondents (51%) believe that socio-economic situation in the country is stable at present. In 2009, only 40% of Belarus’ citizens had the same opinion. 21.5% of the respondents pointed to its gradual improvement (13% in 2009), the same number of citizens (20%) stressed its worsening (36.5% in 2009).
