Michalevic Seeks Asylum in the Czech Republic, Schwarzenberg

Belarusian opposition ex-presidential candidate, Ales Michalevic, who left Belarus, despite the fact that the KGB had taken away his passport, is indeed in the Czech Republic, having asked for asylum. This was stated by Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg on Thursday, March 17. 

«Mr. Michalevic has really asked for a visa, and we have fulfilled his request. According to the information, received from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, he has also asked for asylum in the Czech Republic,» the Czech news agency quotes the Minister referring to the publication of Právo.

According to the politician, Ales Michalevic must obtain asylum in the Czech Republic. «I am personally acquainted with Mr. Michalevic and convinced that the Czech Republic should grant him asylum because it is consistent with our traditions. Mr. Michalevic manifests the same values as we do, and I respect his courage,» said Karel Schwarzenberg.

As Telegraf previously reported, it was reported on March16 that opposition leader of the Union «For modernization» Ales Michalevic, who left the territory of Belarus on March 13 despite the house arrest on charges of organizing mass riots on December 19, is now in Prague .

Meanwhile, March 17, his wife Milana Michalevic refuted online information that the family of opposition was about to leave the Czech Republic. The woman confessed of having no desire to leave the country and didn’t intend to do so.
