Minsk Region, Drunken Driver Stopped With Shots from Kalashnikov

March 14, at Sunday night, the unit of Molodechno division of secure department stopped a drunken driver shooting at the car from Kalashnikov near Lebedevo village, Molodechno district, Minsk region. It was reported by Security Department of the Belarusian Ministry of Internal Affairs.

It was found that, on March 13, at 11:45 p.m., there was Volkswagen Golf moving at high speed on Molodechno streets. «The car dodged along the road, went into the oncoming lane, crossed the crossroads at red light. Acting this way, the driver created a real threat to life and health of citizens», reported in the department.

The unit was on patrol route, turned on the light and sound alarm and attempted to stop the car. The car driver increased the speed and left the city, police car continued his pursuit.

As Interior Ministry said, the police managed to overtake a car — which driver was still ignoring the requirement to stop — near Lebedevo village. Police officers decided to use AKS-74U submachine gun to stop the violator.

After three warning shots, police made two sighting shots at car’s wheels. Volkswagen Golf — with broken left wheels — stopped. «However, the driver -who was intoxicated — did not calm down immediately. Police officers had to use physical force and handcuffs to arrest him», noted in the ministry.

The detainee is not working 30-year-old Smorgon resident, which has repeatedly been prosecuted to administrative responsibility before — including for driving while drunk. There is a statement on art. 18.16 Part 2, and Art. 18.21 Part 2 of the Administrative Code of the Republic of Belarus drawn up at the case.

Police officers actions were lawful, according to prosecutors’ preliminary assessment.
