National Bank of Belarus is finalizing the currency swap agreements with Lithuania and still working on a similar agreement with Poland and China. This was stated by the chairman of the National Bank Petr Prokopovich on November 23. According to him, the basic treaty with Lithuania will be further negotiated in terms of specific amounts and conditions.

«We haven’t yet agreed with our closest neighbors — Ukraine and Russia — on the issues, relating the use of national currencies in payments among our countries,» BelTA  quoted by Petr Prokopovich.

At the same time, the head of the National Bank of Belarus says that the Ukrainian government supports this initiative. «I think that today more and more people in Ukraine and Russia realize the necessity to increase the use of national currencies,» Petr Prokopovich said.

Chairman of the National Bank believes that the Ukrainian National Bank will take drastic steps in this direction in the near future. Belarus and Ukraine are planned to discuss the increasing  national currencies use in the calculations at a meeting of the Interbank Currency Council of both countries’ central banks in early December 2010.
