National Bank Tightens Procedure of Banks' Foreign Currency Purchase

National Bank strongly encouraged the Belarusian banks to be more economical towards the remains of foreign currency reserves. In addition, major bank reported a tightening of the currency purchase procedures by banks to meet the demand of the population. A letter with the relevant content, signed by National Bank deputy Nikolai Luzgin, was sent to the country's banks.

«Since February 2011 the country’s banks have been gaining foreign currency at their own expense in the amount not exceeding the net balance sum of foreign currency, sold to the population in the reporting month,» said in a letter, AFN

The National Bank also asked to distribute the pressure on the remnants of foreign reserves. «We recommend buying this foreign currency evenly within a month. The last day for buying these assets in the reporting month is the third working day of the month, following the reporting period,» the National Bank.

According to Telegraf, the chairman of the National Bank Petr Prokopovich said that there were planned no restrictions on foreign currency purchases for individuals in Belarus. As he says, the population is currently provided with currency in excess. Currency turnover amounted to more than $15 billion in 2010.
