None potential candidate came to the meeting of Belarusian democratic forces, which was held on August 18. At the meeting it was planned to discuss the possibility of policy co-nomination of their representatives in electoral commissions, participation in election monitoring, as well as an appeal to the voters to go into to the streets in case of election fraud.

Nonetheless, initially only the initiator of the meeting, the leader of the European Coalition, Mikola Statkevich and the chairman of the United Civil Party, Anatoly Lebedko came to the meeting, Narodnaya Volya informs.
The deputy leader of «Za Svabodu» Movement Viktar Karnyayenka, deputy chairman of the Belarusian United Left Party «Fair World» Valery Ukhnalyou, deputy chairman of the Free Trade Union of metal industry workers Alaksandr Bukhvostau and BPF chairman Alaksiej Janukievic came an hour behind time.
The basic presidential nominees were absent. Alaksandar Milinkevich, leader of «Za Svabodu» Movement, Uladzimir Niakliajeu, head of the Forward Movement, Andrei Sannikov, leader of the civil campaign «European Belarus», Vital Rymasheuski, co-chairmain of the organizing committee for creation of the Belarusian Christian Democracy, didn’t come to the joint meeting of the Belarusian democratic forces.
«The main thing for us today to agree was a joint monitoring of elections. But the question of a common candidate was not even planned to be considered. But the common ground could be a good stepping stone for the future,» Mikola Statkevich said.
Opposition needs a common ground to nominate a common candidate, Statkevich
The leader of the European coalition does not exclude the possibility of nominating a common oppositional candidate in future, but for this it’s necessary to create some common ground. «In my opinion, we need a ground to discuss together some common problems and to avoid swearing at each other. The ground that we can use not to curse, but to coordinate our joint actions. Otherwise, we may face a situation where we will have not a common candidate, but one candidate,» the politician said.
According to Mikola Statkevich, people were disappointed in the opposition at the previous presidential election (in 2001 and 2006), reports Euramost.org. «People did not see the actions of the opposition leaders, and people didn’t forgive that. I’m afraid, that now they will not respond to the call of those who called them to go into the streets. But the opposition will again make a helpless gesture and will say: This, they say, our people are timid,» the politician said.
As Telegraf informed, Rada of the Belarusian intelligentsia made an attempt to nominate a single candidate from the democratic forces in the presidential election. However, Belarusian politicians decided to abandon mediation RBI, as it had lost its neutrality in choosing a common candidate.
