PACE rapporteur on Belarus arrives in Minsk

Head of the Working Group on Belarus of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Sinikka Hurskainen arrived in Minsk on an official visit, which is to last until August 25. Sinikka Hurskainen reported that during this visit she would like to learn more of the steps that Belarus had made to resume closer cooperation with the PACE. Especially she is interested in the steps on abolishing of the death penalty.

According to the deputy chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, Viktor Guminski, Belarus intends to continue the constructive dialogue with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. According to the Belarusian Vice-Speaker, when the Assembly adopted a resolution on Belarus in April 2010, Sinikka Hurskainen reaffirmed her commitment to dialogue with Belarus. Despite the adoption of this resolution, Sinikka Hurskainen favored the development of further relations with the state, BelTA informs. 
Viktor Guminsky believes that during her visit to the country PACE rapporteur on Belarus will be able to more deeply explore the internal situation in the country, to learn the people’s opinions. «We welcome your visit. We really want to cooperate and develop relations with PACE. Anyway, sooner or later Belarus will become an equal member of PACE,» Viktor Guminski said. 
According to the press service of the PACE, during this visit to Belarus Sinikka Hurskainen also plans to meet with the head of the Council of the Republic Anatoly Rubinov, Minister of Justice Viktor Golovanov, Prosecutor General Grigory Vasilevich, Deputy Foreign Minister Valery Voronetsky, Information Minister Oleg Proleskovski, head of the Parliament working group on the death penalty Nikolai Samoseiko. 
In addition, as Telegraf informed, Sinikka Hurskainen expressed a desire to meet with the representatives of the Belarusian opposition and the media.
