Presidents of Poland and the United States Bronislaw Komorowski and Barack Obama addressed the issue of presidential elections in Belarus in a joint statement, followed by the talks in Washington on December 8. "The U.S. and Poland have called for genuinely free and fair presidential elections in Belarus on December 19," the press service of the White House informed.

«President Obama and President Komorowski reiterated their strong support for the «Eastern Partnership» — the EU initiative, aimed at strengthening ties between the EU and Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, as well as promoting reforms and strengthening democracy in these countries. The two leaders highly appreciated the historic decision of NATO in Lisbon to create a modern and strategic partnership with Russia. U.S. and Poland have adopted a common policy of strengthening ties with Russia,» a statement says.

Meanwhile, as Telegraf previously reported, thanks to the publication of U.S. diplomatic correspondence on Wikileaks, it’s been revealed that the Polish authorities consider the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko as the lesser evil compared with Russia. «Tusk (Prime Minister Donald Tusk — Telegraf) and Sikorski (Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski) look upon cooperation with the authoritarian regime in Belarus as the lesser evil,» U.S. diplomats said.
