Poland asked the U.S. to provide the Belarusian dissidents with financial assistance when being considerably pressed by the authorities. Polish Ambassador in Washington Robert Kupetsi likened the struggle of the Belarusian opposition to the struggle of the Polish "Solidarity" movement, which used to oppose the communist regime.

The diplomat called on the U.S. authorities to help the Belarusian dissidents, just the way the U.S. used to help the Polish dissidents during the Cold War, Associated Press reports.

The diplomat also invited the U.S. together with other countries to the donor conference to support the movement against President Alexander Lukashenko, scheduled on early February in Warsaw.

Recall that thousands of opposition supporters held an unauthorized rally at Kastrychnitskaya Square in Minsk after the presidential election in Belarus with Alexander Lukashenko as a newly elected president, and then attempted to capture the Government House.

The action was suppressed by the internal troops and special forces. About 600 protesters were sentenced to administrative arrest. In addition seven opposition candidates for president were brought to criminal liability.
