UCP leader Anatoly Lebedko said that a political rather than legal registration of presidential contenders is observed in Belarus. According to the UCP head, the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko actually stated at a recent meeting with Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite that "he registers candidates in Belarus."

«From the standpoint of political ethics, Lithuanian President had to exclaim: people, what’s going on in this country?», Anatoly Lebedko said. The UCP leader stressed that the registration of presidential candidates is not a personal issue of Alexander Lukashenko, but the Central Election Commission and the commissions to check the signature, the correspondent of the Telegraf.

In turn, one of the leaders of Yaroslav Romanchuk action groups Anatoly Pavlov said that UCP intends to apply for participation of party members in the work of election commissions next week.

Approximately 300-400 UCP members, including the leader Anatoly Lebedko, are planned to enter the precinct election commissions in Minsk. According to Anatoly Pavlov, that’s when it will be possible to judge the democratic nature of the current presidential campaign.

In addition, a potential presidential candidate Yaroslav Romanchuk commented on the extension of sanctions against certain Belarusian officials. According to him, there’s the merit of the UCP in such a decision of Europe. «We have prepared our understanding of the sanctions, and personally handed over a document to the heads of Poland, Lithuania, Sweden, Germany,» Yaroslav Romanchuk said.

Sanctions against Belarusian Officials are Not Directed against Belarus, Romanchuk

However a potential presidential candidate said that the sanctions against Belarusian officials from Europe are not the sanctions against Belarus and its economy. UCP is satisfied with such a position of Europe. «We stand for bringing those people, suspected of a law violation, to justice,» Yaroslav Romanchuk said.

According to the politician, it is a good sign for the people who provide the transparency and legitimacy of the elections on their eve.

At the same time, Yaroslav Romanchuk said that the Belarusian opposition would like to participate more actively in formulating a common position. «If the elections are visited by thousands of foreign observers, including representatives of the U.S. Congress, Senate, and representatives of the European Parliament, then, of course, they are likely to follow a bad script on October 19. We want them to be held in a peaceful and constructive manner,» Yaroslav Romanchuk said.

«We’ve always said we are open to dialogue, and if European politicians are able to persuade Lukashenko to a constructive dialogue and democratic elections, we will gladly support it,» the UCP potential candidate said.
