In connection with increase of the problems with the purchase of foreign currency in the regions of Belarus Anatoly Drozdov, head of the Information Department of the National Bank, said that Belarusians' faith in National Bank is shaken. Answering the question "You denied the possibility of devaluation on the eve of 2009. Are not you afraid that public faith in National Bank is shaken?", the expert had to admit: "To some extent yes."

«In January 2009, public faith in the national currency, the Belarusian ruble, but not in the banks was shaken,» Anatoly Drozdov said, «Belgazeta» reports.
«I will tell you straight: the decision to devalue was made in the last days before the New Year on December 30-31. Until then, nobody, not even in our National Bank, had believed that this had been able to happen … It was the requirement of the IMF. And the situation was such that we could not but fulfill this requirement,» Anatoly Drozdov said.
As Telegraf informed, residents of the Belarusian regions have complained that the currency exchange offices lack foreign currency. According to the eyewitnesses, the demand for dollars is so high that one can only buy them in the mornings.
Anatoly Drozdov as one of the reasons for the growth in demand for currency named the «negativity stuffing of the incumbent president’s rivals, who promise either a meltdown, or a collapse.» «That’s why people run to the banks. Something similar was observed in winter-spring 2009, when some suspicion was born from scratch, people expected the devaluation, withdrew ruble deposits. But there was no crash!» the expert said.
«There can also be another reason: the villagers received income for the agricultural production and began to buy foreign currency increasingly. And, you know, how slack the banks are in the province,» Anatoly Drozdov said.
