Russians Not Delighted with Lukashenko's Victory at Elections in Belarus, VCIOM

Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) held a poll among Russians on the subject of objectivity of the election results and the correspondence of the possible victory of Alexander Lukashenko in the presidential elections in Belarus with Russia's interests. Compared with 2006, the opinion of Russians about how well the possible victory of Alexander Lukashenko meets with Russia's interests has changed, the authors noted in the survey.

«Four years ago our citizens believed that this leader’s being at power was profitable for Russia (45%), and now the majority of respondents (49%) holds the opposite point of view. The possible victory of Alexander Lukashenko at the presidential elections in Belarus do not inspire Russians,» VtsIOM concludes.

Supporters of the party «Fair Russia» (54%) perceive possible victory of Alexander Lukashenko at elections most negatively, together with Southerners (74%) and 35-44-year-olds (53%). They are opposed by supporters of the Communists (36%), the Far East (40%) and older respondents (30%), VTsIOM statement on the poll.

Thinking about the fairness of the results at the upcoming presidential election in Belarus, every third Russian suggests that they would not comply with the will of the voters (32%). This forecast is made, in the first place, by the supporters of the party «Fair Russia» (38%), the Urals (41%) and 35-59-year-olds (35%).

A significant proportion of respondents gives more conservative estimates, assuming that the breach might take place, but without a major impact on the outcome of the vote process (29%). This point of view is supported by the Liberal Democratic Party (38%), residents of the Central District (35%) and Siberian (34%), as well as 25-34-year-olds (33%).

The minority is those who believe that the results of the elections in Belarus can be trusted (16%). This is, first of all, the Communist Party supporters (28%), the Far East (29%) and elderly Russians (21%).

Russian Public Opinion poll was conducted on December 11-12, 2010. 1.6 thousand people were interviewed in 138 villages in 46 regions and republics of Russia. Statistical error does not exceed 3.4%.
