The Customs Union of Belarus, Russia and Kazakhstan is a matter of some concern in the European Union. It was announced on June 16 in Strasbourg by the EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, speaking to MEPs.

At the same time, Catherine Ashton did not disclose the reasons for this «concern», ITAR-TASS informs.

However, according to the EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, the EU supports Russia’s desire to join the WTO as soon. «Currently, political intentions in respect of free trade must change to action», Catherine Ashton said.

Talking about energy, the EU representative noted: «In this sphere we are actively negotiating with Russia on infrastructure projects, legal basis of cooperation and energy efficiency. The EU continues to consider the Energy Charter as fundamental treaty for cooperation in energy field».
