There's Another Defendant in "Case of December 19"

Members of the Human Rights Centre "Viasna" has learned the name of another defendant in "the case on December 19." An unknown defendant in the case of the riots, a 29-year old programmer from Minsk, Andrei Protasenia, is currently in remand prison of the KGB. This was reported by the accused's brother, Alexander.

According to the young man, the apartment of their parents was searched on February 9, after which Andrei was detained and then charged with «active involvement in the riots» under Part 2 of Art. 293 of the Criminal Code of Belarus.

Alexander Protasenia confirmed that his brother had attended Square on the day of presidential elections, but had committed no violent acts and had freely returned home in the evening.

«I don’t know the way Andrei was detained on February 9, I didn’t see my brother that day. He might be invited to a conversation or enticed out of the house in a different way, and then he was arrested. I only know that he out,» said Alexander Protasenia.

Thus, according to the Human Rights Centre «Viasna,» 36 people were accused in «the case on December 19» on March 17, 2011, 24 of them are in custody, two — under house arrest, nine — under travel restrictions.

Furthermore, according to Telegraf, there have become more suspects as well. March 15, a 28-year-old Minsk dweller Doronin was arrested at his workplace, and placed in temporary detention at Akrestina Street for three days. Thus, the number of suspects has grown to 13 people, one of them is in custody, two are outside the country, the rest — under travel restrictions.

Meanwhile, seven defendants in «the case on December 19» have already been condemned. Four of them have been sentenced to prison with different terms, two defendants have been fined, one has been sentenced to imprisonment in the open type institution.
