The United States strongly condemned the violent actions of the Belarusian authorities against demonstrators at Independence Square in Minsk on December 19. As it became known to Telegraf journalist at the U.S. Embassy in Minsk, the U.S. demanded the immediate release of detained presidential candidates.

«We are particularly concerned about the excessive use of force by the authorities, including the beating and detention of several presidential candidates, and violence against journalists and civil society,» the U.S. embassy said.

«We’re concerned about the fact that a presidential candidate Vladimir Niakliaeu was removed by unknown people from hospital. We demand his immediate and safe return. We urge the Government of Belarus to exercise restraint during the rest part of the electoral process, which should be free from further intimidation and violence,» the statement of the U.S. embassy says.

It should be noted that, according to the information available at the moment, seven former presidential candidates — Rygor Kastusiou, Ales Michalevic, Vladimir Niakliaeu, Vital Rymasheuski, Andrei Sannikov, Nikolai Statkevich, Dmitri Uss — were arrested by Minsk law enforcement officers.
