In Vitebsk, vandals have damaged a monument to the Pope John Paul II, which represents the pontiff in the time of blessing the people with a cross, for the second time. The monument is located on the territory of the church of Merciful Jesus, located at 28 Voinov-Internatsionalistov str. Vandals damaged the monument by its own sculptural element — a metal crozier.

The crozier is the only metal part of the monument, Blog of Vitebsk informs. The Investigation of the first act of vandalism had no result, culprits were not found then.

The first time vandals defaced a monument in autumn 2008, two weeks later after the opening ceremony of the monument. Then, the opening ceremony and consecration of the monument to the Pope in Vitebsk was attended by Apostolic nuncio in Belarus, Archbishop Martin Vidović, the Ordinary of Vitebsk Diocese, Bishop Wladyslaw Blin, Polish ambassador to Belarus, Henryk Litwin, Consul of Poland in Minsk, Krzysztof Swiderek, and other representatives of the diplomatic corps as well as many believers.

This monument is a gift of Poland to Belarusian Catholics.
