Against the background of the "gas" conflict between Belarus and Russia, Moscow has demanded that Minsk takes swift decision on the transit of Russian electric power. According to the Economic Adviser for Russian Embassy in Belarus, Andrei Kuznetsov, the problems are caused by electric power line Smolensk NPP — "Belorusskaya" substation.

In particular, due to unscheduled repairs of the substation, began in January 2010 and continuing until now, Russia’s implementation of its obligations under the transit of electric energy within the ring BRELL (Belarus-Russia-Estonia-Latvia-Lithuania) this year is in doubt, the Russian diplomat explained.

«There are also questions about the functioning of Smolensk nuclear power plant. It is forced to work in the unstable regime, there appear the risks of its unplanned stoppages. Moreover, the stability of energy supplies to Kaliningrad region is under the threat», Andrei Kuznetsov said, PRIME-TASS informs.

The representative of the Russian embassy told that Moscow had repeatedly appealed to the Belarusian side with proposals to hold joint consultations on the issue. According to the Russian diplomat, Russia is ready to help Belarus in the repair of the substation, but no response from Minsk has been received.

In this regard, the adviser for the Embassy of Russia did not rule out that Moscow would have to reconsider the balance of electric energy transit in the region at the end of 2010, as well as «must decide on the balance sheet for 2011».
