Russia Supports No EU Sanctions against Belarus, Lavrov

Russia calls on the Belarusian authorities to respect human rights, but "unlike the European Union does not threaten with any sanctions," said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on May 31. "Attempts to accuse of our supporting the EU, do not reflect reality," he said after his meeting with Alexander Lukashenko.

Russian FM Urged Belarusian Authorities to Release Detainees in "Case of December 19"

The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergei Lavrov again called on the Belarusian authorities to release all the detainees and prisoners on the "case of December 19." "What happened after the election was totally unnecessary and unacceptable. We call upon the release of the presidential candidates, journalists, human rights defenders, as well as two of our citizens, who have not yet charged with any crime," said the Russian minister.

Russia Promises Not to Shut its Eyes to Human Rights Violations in Belarus

Russia Supports EU Demands to Belarusian Authorities

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on January 13 that the Council of Europe's consensus resolution on Belarus reflected the view of Russia and all other states of the Council of Europe." The Governing Body of the Council of Europe - Committee of Ministers - sent an official request to the Belarusian authorities to release the arrested opposition leaders, human rights defenders and journalists, as well as to explain the reason for their detention.

CSTO Presidency Passing from Russia to Belarus

Presidency of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is passing from Russia to Belarus. According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Sergei Martynov, documents, "revealing new crisis response opportunities for the CSTO, as well as new opportunities of usage of the Collective Rapid Reaction Forces," were approved on December 9.
